A gift from Lani
Some of our Church family recently went to Medan to see first hand the work of Compassion. Unfortunately I was not able to join them as we were moving house at the time of the visit. The love and open hearted thankfulness shown to them by the local villagers was truly amazing but the need for more support from us was also very apparent.
The thing that moved me and my wife the most though was that Lani and her family were unexpectedly there and wanted to give us a gift. One of our Pastors took this photo and brought our gift home. We were truly blessed by this huge act of giving from a family who really can’t afford to give. The handmade table runner is beautiful and we both treasure it.

Welcome to our family Lani
Lani lives with her father and her mother. Her duties at home include doing odd jobs. There are 5 children in the family. Her father occasionally works as a rural worker and her mother maintains the home. Due to low income her family struggles to survive.
Lani is not presently attending school. Singing, art and listening to music are her favourite activities. She also attends church activities regularly.
Country: Medan, Indonesia
Lani lives on the plains of Lubuk Pakam, home to approximately 97,400 people. Typical houses are constructed of cement and have plastic sheet roofs. The primary ethnic group is Javanese.
The regional diet consists of chicken, fish and rice. Common health problems in this area include malnutrition and skin diseases.
Most adults in Lubuk Pakam work as drivers and earn the equivalent of $US70 per month. This community needs employment opportunities and tuition assistance.
Indonesia has high urban growth, which puts strain on the capacity of major cities to provide housing and social services. While poverty and low living standards persist throughout Indonesia there has been some progress in recent years through a new task force, the National Team for Accelerating Poverty Reduction, set up in July 2010.
Our sponsorship allows the staff of Soli Deo Gloria Student Centre to provide Lani with Bible studies, medical checkups, nutritious food, games, community service opportunities, tutoring, computer classes and English lessons. Thirty percent of the children in this project are not attending school because they are underage or lack economic resources. The centre staff also provide meetings and seminars for Lani’s parents.
