The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is warning of scammers asking for banking details or attempting to sell phone equipment to people in NBN rollout areas.
The ACCC stated that scammers have made unsolicited phone calls, sent emails or actually visited businesses and homes located in new NBN areas. They would then request personal information, like bank account numbers, claiming that it is a requirement of connecting to the NBN.
In some cases, the scammers have tried to convince potential victims that existing phone equipment is unsuitable for the NBN and a purchase of compatible gear from the scammer is required.
You should check with Talking Business about the required actions if the NBN is coming to your area. Details on our NBN services are available here or simply call us on 1300 666 765.
NBN Co does not provide retail services to consumers so will not ask for banking details. If you think you have provided your account details to a scammer, contact your bank or financial institution immediately.
